It's this new thing I made up, three weeks ago.
Each week I share 5 things I’m currently loving — fitness, food, fashion, or Fenway related. Be prepared to either be inspired to try something new or disappointed by many of my superficial favorites like lipgloss and hair products. Ha.
#1 Supplementing with Curcumin
My aesthetician suggested I try taking turmeric (in the form of curcumin) as an anti-inflammatory since my face was breaking out like WHOA. I’ve been taking it daily now for 1 month, and while I’m also doing a buttload of other things to improve my resting bitch face, I think it’s working.
Even if it’s not improving my complexion (which is similar to that of a 14-year-old boy), ingesting turmeric has a host of other *alleged* benefits like:
- neutralizes free radicals (which cause aging and some diseases)
- boosts levels of the brain hormone BDNF, which increases the growth of new neurons and fights various degenerative processes in the brain, acting as a nootropic and in turn, can reduce symptoms of depression
- lowers risk of heart disease by improving the function of the endothelium and is a potent anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant.reducing inflammation
- may prevent and even treat certain types of cancer and Alzheimer's
- -treat symptoms of arthritis and is in some cases more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs
#2 The Pike Pushup
These are not new to me or any of my former CrossFit OIB athletes but they do seem new to the on-lookers at my globo gym every time I put my butt(hole) in the air and knock out a set. (Ya’ll remember my 'butthole in the air' cue, right?). Anyway, I love to throw these in a rear or medial delt superset on shoulder day, which is my favorite workout day second to rest day. Throw them in on your next shoulder workout or as a substitute for handstand pushups. But remember to turn your pinkies out slightly so as to allow the elbows to travel back as opposed to out to the side and aim the top of your head forward of your fingers, creating a triangle shape on the ground with your hands & heads, like below:
Note: I typically elevate my feet to increase the load.
#3 Quest HERO bars
Y'all know how much I love c a n d y. My maiden name IS CANDI-A, btw. These Quest Nutrition Hero Bars are literally candy bars, but instead of being packed with sugar, they're packed with fiber. SCORE.
The caramel crunch is my favorite by far but you can’t go wrong with any of the three new flavors (Blueberry Cobbler and Vanilla Caramel). Give 'em a go! For extra ooey-gooeyness throw one in the microwauve for 5-10 seconds. You can check them out for yourself here.
#4 These Jeffery Campbell Flats
Since breaking my big toe in a tragic CrossFit injury (walking into a curb on my way out of the gym like a dumdum. You’ve heard how dangerous CrossFit is, right?), I can’t wear heels for very long without feeling like someone took a mallet to my foot. Therefore, my shoe of choice is a flat: THESE FLATS. I know, I know, they kind of look like shoes my nana wore but for real, they class up any outfit that just isn’t classy enough wearing my traditional flats (aka: converse low tops). Right now they’re 25% off at Nordstrom. LUCKEEEEEEE! You can get them here.
#5 THIS outtake from Fenway’s Halloween costume mini-photoshoot
I just love the way she allows me to put boots on her and will sit still until I tell her otherwise. She is seriously the best dogbaby in the world. I’m not sure how an actual human baby of my own will ever compare.
PS: I feel like baby milky ways should have made this list but alas, I am trying to set a good example to my clients and potential clients.
PPS: I bought three GIANT bags of halloween candy because I was so excited to have actual trick or treaters in my kid-friendly neighborhood. However, we ended up going out to dinner with C2 (what we now call the Carriers, who call us K2) and missed all the trick-or-treaters. Now I have a stockpile of Butterfingers, Reece’s Cups, Sour Patch Kids, and… baby Milkways. Can’t. Stop. Thinking. About. Candy.
